1 | Speaking in General
What’s in a name? A lot, when your school is named for a Confederate general. Our mini-documentary, “WHAT’S IN A NAME?" begins with the effort to strip Stonewall Jackson’s name from a school in West Virginia’s capital. It then dives into the systemic racism that has bedeviled U.S. history. We built a resource page for teachers, students, groups, and individuals, who wish to use the video to jump into a deeper understanding of long unhealed wounds from slavery and the Civil War, instutional racism in America, and more. 2 | Not a Meeting, But a Party
ZOOM needs a makeover. Here’s a chance to see what happens when you mess with its tired “Brady Bunch” format, when Tamarack Foundation for the Arts (TFA) hosts a virtual art opening from Taylor Books in Charleston, at 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15. The event includes a special guest—that protean, creative shapeshifter and West Virginia native, Ann Magnuson. To Attend: REGISTER FOR FREE .

When not jousting with the windmills of online publishing (I often feel more like Sancho Panza, if not Rocinante), I’m on the TFA Design Team. Each year, we pick “Emerging Artist Fellows,” to show off the artistry in the state’s hills, hollers and towns. The show above is devoted to the 2020 Fellows: Jes Reger Davis, Jessie McClanahan, Psychoflauge, Jaci Rice, and Nevada Tribble. They’re a cool class of creative individuals who’ll renew faith in the state’s creative future: GET TO KNOW THEM.
3 | A Bridge With a View
Sean O’Leary does essential work with the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy. Which is why we’re printing a stellar photo he took of the New River Gorge in Fayetteville WV. The man deserves props not just for his chartoholic work and research, which seeks to—as the group’s website puts it—“advance the well-being of West Virginia communities.” FOLLOW HIM ON TWITTER.

4 | Badass Artist Paints Badass Women
A few months ago, we profiled gifted Barboursville artist Sassa Wilkes (“A Portrait of the Artist In Her Garden.”) We’d normally not swing our attention back so soon to the same artist. But … Well, see below. The day Ruth Bader Ginsburg died, Sassa stayed up all night to paint the legendary jurist. That was Sept. 22. On Sept. 23, she grokked that there were 100 days left in the year. She decided to paint a portrait a day of 100 “Badass Women” to the end of this year. We couldn’t be happier. Below are the first 12. We’ll be following along. | MORE ON THE SERIES HERE
Some of those featured in “100 Badass Women,” by Sassa Wilkes . UPPER LEFT: Jan Rader; Amelia Earhart; Katherine Johnson; Mother Jones; Frida Kahlo; Maya Angelou; Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Malala Yousafzai; Jane Goodall; Billie Jean King; Rosa Parks; and Michelle Obama.
5 | Pepperoni Rolled
This could lose him some votes in the West Virginia heartand:
Photo posted to a WV for Biden page and re-posted to Twitter. Unsure of locale.
